What if I told you that there was a way to unlock the power of your planets? And what if this power could also lock your planets? Dispositors are the keys of your horoscope.
What is a Dispositor?
A dispositor is essentially the ruling planet of a planet. For example; if your Jupiter is in Leo, that means the Sun is the dispositor of your Jupiter. Essentially, the Sun rules your Jupiter. It does seem strange to have a planet rule a planet, however think of the dispositor as a ruling energy behind your planet. With the above example, we can see that in order to make the most of your Jupiter, you have to apply Solar energy to it. Jupiter is the planet of our highest moral expression. It’s the planet that rules over generosity, tolerance, philosophy, spirituality, morals, goodness, expansion, abundance, etc. Jupiter in Leo is about using your highest good to inspire others and to be dignified in your dealings. Since the Sun is the dispositor of this Jupiter, you must inspire others through your dignity.
So as you can see with the above example, the dispositor can give you so much more information about your planetary placements. In the example given, Jupiter in Leo requires sincerity and dignity. At the same time, the Sun as the dispositor of Jupiter can make the native self-serving and egotistical.
You also want to pay special attention to when the dispositor of your planet is transiting the sign it rules. For example, for the person with their Jupiter in Leo they will want to pay attention to what unfolds in their life when the Sun is transiting Leo. Something important in the realm of their Jupiter is sure to manifest.
Also pay attention to planetary friendships. For example, the Sun has a positive friendship with Jupiter, therefore, the influence of the native’s dispositor will be positive. Now if for example, Jupiter was in Libra, the dispositor for this Jupiter would be Venus since Venus rules Libra. Jupiter is an enemy to Venus because Venus is about material things while Jupiter rules over spiritual things. Therefore, we can deduce that Jupiter in Libra would be a weak position and the native would have to be extra careful not to be self-indulgent when seeking spiritual goodness. Since Jupiter is enemies with Venus, the native will struggle with incorporating the positive influence of Venus into its Jupiterian energy.
A Step Further
Using the above example again, we know that Venus is the dispositor of Jupiter in Libra. If we would like to see how much influence the dispositor has, we can look at the placement of the dispositor. Let’s say that Venus is in Pisces. So while Jupiter and Venus have a negative relationship, Venus is the exalted in Pisces, thus the negative relationship between Jupiter and Venus can be minimized because Venus is in its strongest position.
The sign and house the dispositor is in will also add a flavour to the planet it rules. So for the Jupiter in Leo individual, their dispositor is the Sun is in Virgo, so this means that if their goal is to inspire others through their dignity and sincerity, this needs to come through in a form of service, since Virgo rules service. Make sense?
Now if Jupiter in Leo is in the 3rd house, this shows that you like to communicate. However, because the dispositor, the Sun, is in your 4th house of family, you will want to bring the focus back to your family and home life and communicate with them, because the focus will be on “serving your family” through having healthy communication. Jupiter in Leo in the 3rd like to brag, but the native should be focused on the well-being of those inside the family, and perhaps using their family model as an example for others.
Also make note of any aspects being made from the dispostitor to the planet it rules. This will also affect the energies, either in a positive or negative way.
A final dispositor is when you have one planet in its own sign. You can’t have a final dispositor if you have more than one planet in the sign it rules. Look at your natal chart and see if you have this. Remember, you can only have one planet in its own sign in order to have a final dispositor.
The final dispositor in a chart is the overall ruling influence in the native’s life. No other planet can dispose of it. It’s an energy the native will have to wield, otherwise they will constantly run into road blocks. The final dispositor is the skeleton key of the horoscope, it is able to unlock all of the planetary energies. If for example Saturn is your final dispositor, you will have to apply patience, perseverance, and effort in all areas of your life.
If you don’t have a final dispositor, it means your life will be more varied.
Some Astrologers are opposed to using the final dispositor when you have planets in mutual reception with each other. For example if your Jupiter is in Virgo, and your Mercury is in Sagittarius, you can’t have a final dispositor because Jupiter is in the sign of Mercury and Mercury is in the sign of Jupiter. The two would cancel each other out.
Playing around with dispositors will enlighten the heck out of you. Your struggles and talents will be revealed. As well, if you have a difficult relationship with one of your planets, knowing the dispositor can show you what is making it difficult, and how you can overcome those problems.
I would say dispositors are somewhat of an advanced astrological technique because you must have a pretty good grasp of the archetypes in Astrology. Nonetheless, I encourage you to at least find the dispositor of one of your planets which can reveal a lot about your personality in that specific context.
Dispositors are keys that will help you open up or lock in certain energies and themes in your life.
