Astro-Witchery

The Cosmic Space Priestess sits perched on her windowsill- her talisman telescope gazes up at the luminaries in the night sky. Her eyes are nebulas, her lips are stars, and her magic weaves a silver spun thread throughout the glittering midnight tapestry up above.

Astro-witchery is a form of Astrology that views the zodiac signs as sorcerers, the planets as talismans, and the aspects as spells. Analyzing an astrology chart using this technique allows one to see the horoscope as a grimoire of sorts- full of magical secrets. You can focus on particular parts of the chart for example, you might just decide to focus on career and see what magic lies there and how the witch/warlock can harness that energy.

Maple Tree Transit: October 14-23

Planet- Moon

Element- Water

The Maple Tree transit is one of change. Ruled by the moon, there will be many small changes that you will have to deal with during this time. The Maple Tree will provide a sense of nurturing during all of the changes so remember to be gentle with yourself. There is a sweetness to life which will become apparent, so take time for yourself to indulge and unwind. Think positively and if you find yourself lost or hurt, look to the Maple Tree for inspiration. It is a sturdy tree that can withstand the harshness of the Northern elements. You too will be able to endure anything so long as you stand firm in who you are. Humour and laughter can also do wonders at this time.

The Faerie Handbook: REVIEW

The Faerie Handbook is an enchanting read that takes the reader on a fantastical journey through faerie lore. If the faerie kingdom were to make a manual for new initiates- this would be it! The book is divided in to four sections: Flora & Fauna, Fashion & Beauty, Arts & Culture, and Home, Food, & Entertaining. Chapters include where to find fairies, common inhabitants, fairy houses, craft ideas, fashion, recipes, fairy history and so much more!

Reading The Faerie Handbook felt like a sprinkling of periwinkle blue fairy dust on my head from an invisible winged friend. You can’t help but get pulled into this magical realm of a book, making you feel as though you yourself are a faerie. Reading the pages felt as if it were consecrated by some great fairy queen in a thicket of a luscious forest in the early days of Spring. The renderings and pictures are charming and romantic which gives off a vintage vibe that suits the antique look of this book.

What I particularly love about this book is that it doesn’t come across as juvenile or kitschy- quite the opposite in fact. There is a discussion of the more menacing and sinister sides of the Faerie world which are not widely known. There is also a lovely balance between vintage and modern references to Faeries- including some obscure mentioning’s such as Tasha Tudor and Katerina Plotnikova.

There is an abundance of folklore for those interested in the history of Faeries and cutesier aesthetic pleasing information for lovers of the ethereal lifestyle. Quotes and literature references to the Faerie world weave a gold-spun thread throughout the book, luring the reader deeper and deeper into its vast kingdom.

This handbook is a love letter to those who find themselves drifting between two worlds- the mystical flower kingdom and our mundane reality. There are books about witches and vampires, but there hasn’t been such a comprehensive collection of faerie facts and information compiled into one book before. If you are a fan of Faerie Magazine, think of The Faerie Handbook as the flower crown of fairy books. The book is written with both a whimsical and poetic flair that pulls the reader into its silver lined pages. As the ultimate fairy tale, this handbook is a must read and should be in every fairy lover’s collection.

A big thank you to Faerie Magazine, Carolyn Turgeon, and Lily Lopate at HarperCollins for providing me with an advanced reader copy to review.

Reflections on my Jupiter Return

This year I experienced my Jupiter Return in Libra which affected my 4th house. Jupiter in Libra generally speaking was about spiritual diplomacy. It was about learning to embrace sovereignty and letting go of self sacrifice. When you are able to accomplish this, you will have achieved the soul lesson of Libra- balance.

My Jupiter Return

Since September 2016 until today, I have had many lessons around this theme. Since Jupiter expands whatever it touches, Jupiter in Libra expanded all of the imbalances in my own life. The 4th house in Astrology rules home and family and it was in this area of my life, that I learned my most important lessons.

Firstly, the desire to want to move out of my parents home became very strong. I had visions of my own space and found myself fantasizing about what this space would like like. I started to reflect on why I wanted to leave, and I came to the conclusion that it was because I needed more alone time to get in touch with what it is that I truly wanted to experience in my life.

This was also the year that I told my family what some of my personal goals and deepest needs and desires were. This was a huge step for me because I do seek approval quite a lot, but since voicing my needs, I’ve found myself less worried about what my family thinks of me.

Biggest Lessons

This biggest lesson for me this year was about honouring my own needs and path before my family’s.  I struggled with this, as I thought it was selfish of me to put them last, but if I wasn’t in a good place- I couldn’t possibly be there for them.

Jupiter Returns mark major spiritual transformations in a person’s life, and for me, not only did I share (Libra) some of my deepest wants and needs with my family (4th house Jupiter Return), but I saw my creativity also explode.

The sign that Jupiter traditionally rules over is Pisces- and having my Moon, Mercury, and Midheaven in Pisces (even my Sun according to Vedic Astrology), I saw my spiritual career take off. I wrote a lot this year, published quite a bit, saw The Luminessence evolve, and scored my dream job at a New Age shop. I believe this happened because I got honest with myself and my family.

My proudest accomplishment with my Jupiter Return was being able to share more of I was with my family and having their support to chase my non-traditional dreams. I embraced my own sovereignty and stopped sacrificing who I was for them.

In Sidereal Astrology- Jupiter will be entering the constellation of Libra this year. I guess that means I will be experiencing a double Jupiter Return? Double the trouble I guess!

Full Moon in Aries October 5, 2017: Putting Out the Flames

Moonbeams

Moon in Aries opposite Sun in Libra- you vs me

Moon opposite Mercury- feelings are not being communicated

Pluto Square Moon- Control and change is needed, but we feel nervous about having to make a change

Mars in Virgo conjunct Venus in Virgo- small details is what is needed now, gentle energy

Mars trine Pluto- taking small practical steps is the way to handle all of this fire

Mars square Saturn- we want the small steps to make fast changes, but Saturn is slowing us down with his methodology

Mars opposite Neptune- just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean there isn’t work going on behind the scenes

A full moon in Aries always sets off fire alarms in the cosmos. Action for the sake of action is meaningless until inspiration is thrown into the mix. I get the feeling that for the past couple of months, on an individual level, we have been robotically living, meaning that our lives have been hectic and busy but missing joy and heartfelt ambition. When we are in the season of Libra, it becomes very obvious where we have been giving too much of ourselves at the expense of our own well-being. The Full Moon in Aries is going to push us to take small practical steps to change our lives. With the moon opposing Neptune this can be as simple as saying “no” or standing up for yourself. It is during fiery times that we come to appreciate the little things in life. It’s time to take a break and pay attention to whether your hectic lifestyle is for selfish reasons and if you are offsetting this by taking the time to help others? Venus in Virgo conjunct Mars in Virgo shows the need to want to express loving sentiments to others, and we must remember that when we serve others we are indirectly serving ourselves. The most important thing to keep in mind during this lunation is have you been self-serving or self-sacrificing lately? And is there a difference between the two?

Rowan Tree Transit- October 4-13

Planet- Sun

Element- Fire

The Rowan Tree transit is one of patience and protection. This tree is one of the first trees to bloom in the Spring indicating the arrival of something new soon. Able to grow on mountains in high altitudes, we are asked to look to the divine (Sun) for answers during this period. Opening up to creative inspiration (Sun) will assist you greatly. The strong protective qualities of this tree will enable you to walk your spiritual path with grace and safety as it will be a long journey. The word Rowan is believed to come from the Norse word ‘runa’ meaning charm and or protection. Some sort of spiritual awakening will happen at this time, so you must be patient with yourself in order reap the rewards of this experience. The Rowan Tree has often been referred to as Witchwood due to the 5 pointed star shaped berries produced. Staying grounded through any means will be extremely helpful at this time. You will be protected in any undertaking during the Rowan Tree transit.

My Astrology Conundrum

Thoughts……

Astrology is a complex science that can be scary for many people. The scariness comes from the idea that you have no control over your life and that free will is non-existent. That’s a whole different blog post (coming soon), but I wanted to address the idea and fact that the planets don’t control us, rather, we influence their movements.

If you think about it, if we choose what kind of life we are going to incarnate into, then that must mean, the planets have to acommodate this, by aligning a certain precise way the moment we are born, and continue to play their cosmic chess game in the sky.

I believe it is our range of consciousness that determines the movements of the planets. The intensity we experience here on earth directly affects the heavenly bodies up above. I don’t believe the planets force us to experience certain events in our lives, but rather, as we evolve the planets help to facilitate this. I’ve noticed when I have gone through hard times in my life, the cosmic energies at the time were very gentle and soft. Of course when we’re ready to experience struggle- the planets will make it happen up there too.

Everything is a mirror of us. The further people have moved away from source, the higher the cancer rates (people are literally rotting away). The more fiery people are, the hotter the weather. The more open people have been about taboos, the more naked society has become (the rise of nudity). The more we search for meaning in our lives, the more awakened we have become (the rise of mainstream spirituality).

Next time you dread that planetary alignment or “bad” transit, pay attention to what you’re thinking because that is the magnet to the planets.

And so it is.
