A Saturnalia Ritual

Saturnalia was an ancient Pagan festival held from December 17-25. It was celebrated to honour the God of the harvest and agriculture-Saturn. Ancient Romans believed that Winter was caused by the Sun losing its power due to a battle with the God of the Dead- Pluto. In order to bring back the harvest, various rituals and sacrifices would be performed to appease the Sun God.

We can incorporate modern day Saturnalia themes in our modern magickal practices. An easy way to do this would be to create a Saturnalia crystal grid. Crystal Grids are vortices of energy created using healing crystals for the purpose of manifestation. The choice of crystals and their placements will ensure that their energies are properly utilized.

Saturn may have been the planet of agriculture to the ancient pagans, but in modern day Astrology, Saturn is the planet of responsibility, effort, structure, and karma. We can harness Saturn’s energies during Saturnalia to help us manifest our goals. It will be even more potent this year as Saturn will be changing signs from Sagittarius where it has been for 2.5 years, to Capricorn until 2020, which is its natural ruler. Saturn’s manifesting abilities will be extra strong and powerful which is why this year, Saturnalia will be very special.

How to Make Your Crystal Grid

The size of your crystal grid does not matter.

What you will need:

6 pieces of Brown Agate or Turitella Agate

6 pieces of Smoky Quartz

1 piece of Sunstone

The Ritual

Perform this ritual on a Saturday night.

Find a quiet spot where you will be assembling your crystal grid. You can google crystal grid templates or sacred geometry for inspiration.

Ensure that your crystals have been cleansed. I would recommend rubbing sea salt on them as Salt is ruled by Saturn.

Take a deep breath in and think of what you would like to manifest. Please focus on just 1 thing.

Pick up your first piece of brown agate and say the following words

“Lord Saturn, I consecrate this crystal to bring forth _____________ into my life.”

Place the crystal down onto your gird.

Continue picking up all of your crystals one by one, (leaving Sunstone last) repeating the above words.

When you reach your piece of Sunstone, say the following words:

“I call upon the Sun to infuse my life with ___________________.  I honour you Oh practical Sun! Shine your light on what needs to be done!”

Place the piece of Sunstone in the centre of your crystal grid.

Your Saturnalia crystal grid is complete.

Disassemble it after December 25th.

365 Days of Crystal Magic by Sandra Kynes: REVIEW

365 Days of Crystal Magic takes you on a daily journey using crystals. Each day features a different ritual that uses crystals to invoke the energy of that particular day. Suggestions on how to use the stones to utilize their magical properties are included.

Astrology, Celtic Ogham, tree months, runic half months, ancient festivals, moon sabbats are also included.

Since different crystals are used each day, the author makes a point to not encourage the reader to purchase every single crystal mentioned. Rather, the book is written in such a way that encourages you to learn how to tap into the crystal for its different properties, and to also create your own rituals.

The rituals were simple and easy to follow and did not require many additional tools. I only wish that a brief explanation as to why certain rituals were chosen for specific days was included. Also, alternative crystals should have been included for each ritual.

This is a great “how to” book for anyone who wishes to enhance their crystal divination systems or for beginners. 365 Days of Crystal Magic will help you to familiarize yourself with many different crystals and their magical properties. A must read for any crystal lover!

Venus in Copper

Since discovering Venus is my soul planet I have been on a mission to learn everything I can about this beauty of a planet.  I recently learned that Copper is ruled by Venus for a variety of reasons.

Venus & Copper

According to Homer, Aphrodite (Venus) was born from the blue green waves of the Mediterranean coming ashore in her golden reddish brownish hair as depicted by Botticelli. Take a second and scry a piece of Copper and see if you can witness the warm glow of Venus.

Venus was born on the island of Cyprus where we get the word Copper- Latin word for Cyprus is Cuprum which comes from the Assyrian word for Copper- Kipar. Copper is soft and malleable embodying the divine feminine principle.

The Glyph

If we look at the glyph for Venus we can see the Sun-circle rising above the cross showing an infusion of solar power. In Alchemy it is believed we each possess the planets within us, so the Sun is representative of consciousness rising above earth which is seen in the lower part of the Venus glyph. Venus as a planetary archetype is about moving matter to perfection and beauty- the only way we can do this is by raising our vibrations over the material desires of Earth.

The earliest form of Venus was the Egyptian ankh, symbol of universal life; the egg-shaped womb of the goddess, the place where life is generated, surmounting the cross of the elements. This womb from which the sun emerges is represented by the copper cauldron of alchemy. Christianity removed the womb egg from the cross- only leaving the material cross of unbalanced matter left.

On a side note, the Venus glyph also looks like a hand held mirror which is due to Venus ruling vanity and beauty. The traditional hand held mirror evolved from the Ankh.

Venus in Copper

Copper is highly conductive representing the receptive nature of the feminine.

Ancient Egyptians used Malachite eye shadow for beautification purposes.

The peacock- a bird sacred to Venus owes it greenish plumage to its high Copper contents.

The bluish coppery colouring in crystals such as Malachite, Azurite, Peacock Ore, & Bornite are all Venus ruled and have a soft feminine melodic sound to them.

Many instruments are made using copper due to its high resonance. In Astrology, Venus rules music.

Copper is known to absorb water and fluids changing its form and colour. Women have more fluid retention issues than men and have the ability to synthesize our emotions (water) much better than men.

Copper is abundant in female sexual organs (ruled by Venus) and is used up during sexual activity.

Copper deficiencies in soil produce sickly crops. Interestingly enough, Taurus- one of two Venus ruled signs is responsible for agriculture.

When combined with other minerals Venus transforms substances into complex salts, which is why Alchemists referred to Venus as the “harlot of the metals.”

Indeed every plant, animal, mineral, and person finds themselves easily seduced by the beauty and charm of Miss Venus.

AstroJewelry- Jupiter & Jewelry- Part 1

Jupiter is known as the planet of abundance, expansion, spirituality, education, and riches. Riches can actually extend to jewelry as well.  I have noticed a correlation between your Jupiter sign and the kind of jewelry you like and own. Jupiter is actually known as the ‘Gem of Fortunes.’ Down below you can find some celebrity examples.

Coco Chanel- Jupiter in Cancer

Image result for coco chanel pearls

Coco Chanel’s Jupiter is placed in Cancer in her 7th House. Cancer is ruled by the moon just like pearls. Coco Chanel was responsible for making pearls a quint-essential French fashion staple. Coco Chanel was often referred to as the Queen of Pearls. This is still seen in the House of Chanel today as Mr. Karl Lagerfeld has kept the brand true to Coco’s signature. Coco’s obsession with the elite also led her to being greatly influenced by sporting culture- specifically yachting. It’s no surprise that nautical fashion- including pearls- were a major part of her aesthetic.

Elizabeth Taylor- Jupiter in Leo- 8th House

We all know Elizabeth Taylor was a jewelry snob. Her extensive collection of jewels is a direct result of her Jupiter in Leo. Not only did she have an abundance of jewelry, but a Leo Jupiter creates a love of gaudy, showy, attention grabbing pieces. Elizabeth was known to flaunt her jewels, and outshined and outsparkled even the most prestigious diamond mines in the world. Her 8th House Jupiter allowed her to be gifted with jewels as opposed to purchasing them herself- although she did this as well. Her husbands were known to call her “very expensive.”  An 8th House Jupiter in Leo also made her obsessed with jewels and she would go to great lengths to acquire the rarest ones. After all, her Leoline Jupiter did make her the Queen of Diamonds- and since the 8th House is ruled by Scorpio- diamonds themselves are ruled by this sign, as they are buried deep within the earth.

Mary Pickford- Jupiter in Aries- 2nd House

Mary Pickford may not be someone you would immediately associate with jewelry, but this silent movie star had a very extensive and expensive (2nd House) jewelry collection. She was dubbed Hollywood’s “first millionairess” and was obsessed with rubies and sapphires. Douglas Fairbanks gifted Mary with the Star of Bombay which was a 182 carat blue star sapphire. Mary later donated it to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC where it’s currently on display. Mary’s obsession with rubies and sapphires is due to her Aries Jupiter. Sapphire is a power stone and is the historical birthstone for the month of April- Mary was born April 8. Rubies on the other hand are red coloured which is connected to the fire sign Aries.

Marilyn Monroe- Jupiter in Aquarius-7th House

Image result for marilyn monroe rosary beads

Marilyn Monroe may have sung “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” but in truth, Marilyn was more of a handbag collector than a jewelry collector. Aquarians are not known to be glitzy and glamorous, so while Marilyn’s Jupiter is in the sign of Aquarius, it’s fair to say that jewelry really didn’t interest her as much as her intellectual pursuits. Most of Marilyn’s jewelry resembled rosaries or had an ecclesiastical look to them. Aquarians can be quite religious which is the placement of her Jupiter. What is interesting is that her estate did find a rosary necklace with onxy and jade beads with a large crucifix that appeared to be more worry beads than a statement piece. This could be due to the nervous Uranus energy associated with her Jupiter. This rosary necklace was also given to her from her husband Joe Di Maggio- which explains the 7th House placement of her Jupiter.

Sophia Loren- Jupiter in Libra- 9th House

Image result for sophia loren jewelry

Sophia Loren like Elizabeth Taylor is a massive jewelry lover. Her Jupiter in Libra gives her a strong thirst for jewels and the gaudier the better! Sophia was a master at balancing (Libra) her statement pieces with classic outfits so as not to compete with the jewels. Her Jupiter is ruled by Venus, so the more feminine the jewelry, the better. Her Jupiter is placed in her 9th house, meaning she traveled all over the world visiting jewelry shops and was not biased towards Italian jewelry, in fact, she was a huge fan of the French brand Cartier, since the 9th house does rule foreigners.

Amy Adams- Jupiter in Pisces- 11th House

Image result for amy adams emerald  Image result for amy adams emerald

Amy Adams is known to be quite flashy on the red carpet. Her go to jewelry pieces are emerald. Emerald is ruled by Mercury which has very good relations with the planet Jupiter. Emeralds bring positive change to Jupiter in Pisces people, particularly so if Mercury is in the 4th or 7th House. Amy has her Mercury in the 4th House which maybe why she is so drawn to these heartful gemstones. The 11th House placement of her Jupiter indicates that she only wears flashy jewels when she is at an important event.

Miranda Kerr- Jupiter in Sagittarius- 5th House

Image result for miranda kerr jewelry collection

Miranda Kerr might be a supermodel, but she is also a pretty hard core new ager. In countless interviews Miranda has mentioned that as a child in Australia, she would go searching for crystals in the outback with her family and was taught the magical properties of the stones through her grandparents. Miranda has been a public advocate for gemstone healing and even created (5th House Creativity) her own jewelry line using healing crystals/gems. She carries a clear quartz crystal wand beaded with rose quartz in her purse, and carries a small rose quartz piece with her at all times. Her Sagittarius Jupiter makes her Jupiter extra powerful as Jupiter is in its own sign and also spiritualizes her jewelry. Her new agey aesthetic comes into view with her raw gemstone jewelry.

Crystal Magic by Sandra Kynes- REVIEW

A must read for anyone who uses and or is interested in crystals- whether you are a lapidary or witch- you will find this book to be both grimoire and text book. Crystal Magic is one of the best books I have read about crystals. Most books on this topic simply name crystals and their properties but this book took it a step further. The first part of the book is about the History and Science of crystals which is absolutely needed if you are going to be working with them. It is fascinating learning about crystals and gemstones in antiquity whether it was in astrology, divination, or medicinal uses. Learning about crystals from a scientific perspective such as their mineral compositions, their crystalline structures, and their formations provides a wealth of information about crystals that help you understand their magical properties even more. This section was not overly scientific, so if you are not a sciencey person, you have nothing to fear about this part of this book. This was extremely useful as we can sometimes forget that at the end of the day, crystals come from the earth. Tips on how to spot fake stones was also very helpful as we want to ensure that we are not simply relying on the placebo effect and that we aren’t supporting fraudulent distributors. I thought the chapter on crystals grids that are based on the crystalline structures of the crystals to be ingenious as I have never come across information about that before. The Compendium of Stones was one of the best I have seen as it also included the history of stones as many books opt not to include that in their descriptions. Two reference guides are also included at the back of the book that list the magical correspondences for the crystals such as ruling deities and planets. Once again this was very helpful. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced crystal practitioner, this book creates a solid foundation in understanding crystals from their historical and geological perspectives. Understanding crystals, gems, and minerals history and compositions creates a deeper and richer appreciation for these marvelous rocks.
