Road with Cypress and Star- Vincent Van Gogh- 1890
In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh said this about Cypress Trees “”always occupying [his] thoughts” and that he found them “beautiful of line” and proportioned like an Egyptian obelisk. ”
The evening star on the left of the tree and the crescent moon on the right side of the Cypress might be connected to the conjunction of Venus and Mercury on April 20, 1890 when the luminescence of these two planets were comparable to the star Sirius.
The Cypress Tree in the middle of these two heavenly bodies is thought to represent death- an obelisk reaching up to the stars- as Cypress Trees are strongly associated with mortality. Historians of Art believe that Van Gogh knew he was going to die and wanted to paint a cosmic representation of this. The two companions walking down the path can be symbolic of the the physical body and the soul or Van Gogh’s desire for companionship and his depiction of universal love.
